Jimmy Kimmel marked roughly a year since being pulled off the air after FCC Chair Brendan Carr threatened ABC over a joke about Charlie Kirk's killing, noting that the threats from the agency have not let up. Robert De Niro then appeared in character as the FCC chair, bat in hand, to deliver a mock inspection of the show.
In the bit, De Niro produced a list of 192 insults Kimmel has aimed at President Trump and demanded Kimmel pair each future jab with a compliment, offering a crude example involving Trump's penmanship. Kimmel pushed back that this amounted to controlling speech through federal power, which De Niro's character cheerfully confirmed was exactly the point.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A comedian getting pulled off the air by a federal regulator over a joke is the kind of thing that used to sound like satire before it became the plot. Dressing it up with a baseball bat and some profanity doesn't make it less true that the punchline is also the complaint. The real inspection here isn't of Kimmel's monologue, it's of how thin the skin has gotten at the top.
