Trump berated CNN's Kristen Holmes in the Oval Office on Monday after she asked him to respond to Sen. Jon Ossoff's remark about his relationship with aide Natalie Harp, calling her disrespectful and fake news.

The White House's Rapid Response 47 account on X escalated by telling Holmes her children would someday be sickened and embarrassed by her question, calling her a disgraceful embarrassment to her profession.

CNN defended Holmes as one of the most respected reporters covering the White House, while former Trump aides Sarah Matthews and Stephanie Grisham called the post vindictive and cowardly.

There was a time when a government's response to an unwelcome question was a terse no comment, which had the twin virtues of brevity and not involving anyone's children. The upgrade to a taxpayer-funded account speculating about how a reporter's kids will feel about her someday is not a communications strategy; it is a tantrum with a login. Anyone still describing this operation as rapid response should note that only one of those words is doing any work.
