Trump DOJ charges ICE agent with lying about Minneapolis shooting

Federal prosecutors charged ICE officer Christian Castro with lying to investigators about a January shooting that wounded Venezuelan man Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis during an immigration operation in Minneapolis. Authorities say video evidence contradicted the officers' initial account, which had claimed Sosa-Celis and another man attacked officers with a shovel and broom handle before Castro shot Sosa-Celis in the leg. Charges against Sosa-Celis have since been dropped.

A federal judge, a Trump appointee, last week denied Minnesota's bid to extradite Castro from Texas, ruling the state hadn't met legal requirements because Governor Greg Abbott had not formally rejected the extradition request. Minnesota's governor argued Abbott was effectively stalling by not signing a rendition warrant more than two months after Castro's arrest.

The shooting occurred a week after ICE agents fatally shot U.S. citizen Renee Nicole Good in the same crackdown. An Associated Press review found at least two dozen ICE employees and contractors have faced criminal charges since 2020.

When the video says one thing and the sworn statement says another, somebody is lying, and it is not usually the camera. An agency that tells you lying under oath is a serious offense while its own governor slow-walks the paperwork on getting the liar home is not exactly showing its work. Two months of not signing a warrant is its own kind of answer.
