President Trump arrived at the United Nations Tuesday and rode the escalator without incident, save for a bystander calling out ‘be careful with the stairs’ as he passed, drawing laughter from the crowd. The line referenced last year's episode when the escalator he and Melania Trump were riding suddenly stopped, forcing them to walk.

Trump had demanded an ‘immediate investigation’ into that malfunction, calling it ‘sabotage’ and suggesting someone be arrested for it. A U.N. spokesperson at the time offered a considerably less dramatic account, saying a member of Trump's own delegation may have accidentally triggered the escalator's emergency stop.

An escalator stops, and one side calls it a mechanical hiccup while the other calls for an arrest. A year later the machine works fine and a stranger gets a laugh line out of it for free. That is about the size of the gap between how this White House describes small inconveniences and what they usually turn out to be.
