Monique Worrell responds to rumors she’s about to be suspended again

Monique Worrell, the twice-elected state attorney for Florida's 9th Judicial Circuit, said Tuesday she received a phone call warning her removal by Gov. Ron DeSantis was imminent, with a former assistant statewide officer lined up to replace her. The governor's office did not respond to a request for comment, and Attorney General James Uthmeier said he knew nothing about it.

Worrell cited falling crime statistics — a 33% drop in Orlando shootings and a 28% drop in Orange County crime overall — as evidence she is doing her job, and suggested any removal would instead be tied to a leaked grand jury report on the Hope Florida Foundation scandal, which named Uthmeier as having authority over an alleged $10 million diversion of Medicaid settlement funds.

Uthmeier has called the investigation a politically motivated witch hunt; Republican Sen. Rick Scott called the report deeply concerning. DeSantis previously suspended Worrell in 2023 for alleged neglect of duty, a decision the Florida Supreme Court upheld, but she won reelection in 2024 by 14 points.
