A Groundwork Collaborative and Century Foundation report found everyday school supplies climbed nearly 8% year over year, totaling almost $175, using retail scan data across all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Lunchboxes rose the most, over 26%, followed by notebooks, index cards, and other paper goods.

The report says makers of Sharpie, Mead notebooks, and Logitech headphones have publicly attributed price increases to Trump's tariffs on imported goods, and a researcher noted lunchboxes' plastic costs are also tied to oil prices amid the ongoing Iran conflict. One shopper described a $66 total for basic supplies that left her stunned at the register.

A pencil box costing five bucks more doesn't sound like history being made, until you multiply it by every kid walking into every classroom this month. The people selling the pencils are the ones naming the tariffs as the reason, which is a strange thing to lie about if you didn't have to. Nobody in Washington is volunteering to reimburse the difference, funny how that part never makes the press release.
