Barack Obama told a private fundraiser that fast-moving AI development in private hands could be dangerous without oversight, and urged House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries to build a public policy framework if Democrats retake the House in November, according to the New York Times. He also wants 2028 presidential candidates to make AI safety and economic impact a central plank.

The remarks follow warnings from Anthropic researchers about extinction-level risk, rogue AI agents hacking systems, and safety staff quitting over the pace of development. Anthropic's own CEO has since asked companies to slow down, a request that OpenAI's Sam Altman and Elon Musk both said they agreed with, from companies that continue racing to ship the next model.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
You've got to hand it to an industry that can warn about the end of the world and still make its quarterly numbers. When the people building the thing are the loudest voices begging somebody to stop them, that's not caution, that's a press strategy. A framework is a fine idea, but frameworks move at the speed of Congress and these labs move at the speed of a server rack.
