A new Bureau of Justice Statistics report finds students ages 12 to 18 faced higher rates of victimization at school than away from it in 2024, though the overall long-term rate has barely budged since 2014.

Nonfatal violent victimization at school jumped from 14.2 per 1,000 students in 2023 to 21.8 per 1,000 in 2024, driven largely by simple assault, while theft victimization has fallen sharply since 2014.

The report also found sharp income disparities: students from households earning under $25,000 a year experienced victimization at more than triple the rate of those from households earning over $100,000, while race and gender showed no significant differences at school.
