Ahead of a solar eclipse, social media filled with claims the event would cause catastrophic gravity failure, citing a supposedly leaked NASA document called "Project Anchor" predicting colliding black holes, seven seconds of zero gravity, 40 million deaths from falls, and a decade-long economic collapse. NASA directly denied the claim, stating Earth's gravity is determined by its mass and cannot simply switch off.

A black hole specialist at the University of Hertfordshire said gravitational waves are far too weak to notice, requiring the most sensitive instruments on Earth just to detect them. Separately, US Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene called the eclipse a

strong sign

from God urging national repentance, while TikTok theories claiming the eclipse's path traced a biblical pattern over Illinois were debunked by a religion academic who noted the map was simply wrong.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
It takes a special kind of internet to manufacture a 40-million-death hoax specific enough that NASA has to formally deny the planet will lose gravity. A sitting member of Congress reading celestial mechanics as a personal message from God is, depressingly, the least outlandish claim in the whole pile.
