Five days after a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia, hopes of finding survivors are fading as rescuers in Cali report finding only one site with signs of life. Around 290 people have died, 140 remain missing, and nearly 4,000 are injured, with over two-thirds of deaths concentrated in Cali and Pereira.

Officials expect to finish recovering bodies by Sunday before shifting to heavy equipment to clear debris, even as 269 aftershocks have complicated the effort. New President Abelardo De La Espriella, a week into office, faces criticism for initially declining some international rescue offers before accepting help from Israel and the United States, and says he asked Trump in a phone call to suspend tariffs on Colombian goods.
