With Election Day weeks away, states including Georgia, Indiana, Ohio and Utah have suspended or cut gas taxes, while ten states loosened rules on tax-exempt dyed diesel even before Trump's own executive order did it nationwide. Ohio's Senate Minority Leader noted the obvious: lawmakers had options to act on fuel costs earlier this year and didn't, until polling numbers arrived.
Governors in Texas, Tennessee, Louisiana and elsewhere lined up to thank Trump for an order that, in several cases, simply caught up to what they'd already done at the state level. Trump himself told a Nebraska crowd the move ‘should absolutely ensure your election,’ which is one way to describe a policy.

A tax that was too important to touch in spring turns out to be optional the month the yard signs go up. If gas was costing too much in August, it was costing too much in March, and the Ohio fellow who said they could have acted earlier has the calendar on his side. When the President says out loud that a policy should ensure your election, you can take him at his word about who it was for.
