Sen. Ted Cruz responded to concerns about AI safety by arguing that slowing U.S. development is pointless because China won't stop either. Pressed by a Politico reporter on whether that meant American AI should be the one to potentially wipe out humanity, Cruz said he'd rather have American killer robots than Chinese ones, calling the remark tongue-in-cheek but not entirely.
The comment arrived amid warnings from AI industry insiders, including a former Anthropic and OpenAI employee and a current Anthropic staffer, that advanced models could pose existential risks by decade's end. Cruz was not among lawmakers pushing for tighter regulation and was widely mocked online, including by the California governor's press office, for skipping past the option of no killer robots at all.
