Maryland Eastern Shore Republicans, led by Del. Chris Adams alongside Sens. Johnny Mautz, Mary Beth Carozza and Sen. Chris West, filed suit against the General Assembly over the legality of the process used to pass a constitutional ballot question on redistricting during last week's special session in Annapolis. The suit follows a separate lawsuit already filed by the Maryland Freedom Caucus.

Adams argues the legislature is trying to connect the Eastern Shore to urban Anne Arundel County, diluting rural representation in Washington, and that the process bypassed constitutional protocol. He says he hopes courts rule before the September 3 deadline when ballots go to print.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Two lawsuits against the same ballot measure within the same news cycle suggests either a genuinely shaky legislative process or a coordinated legal offensive dressed up as principle, and probably a bit of both. Either way, the courts now have three weeks to sort out a redistricting fight before the printers start rolling.
