Former Republican strategist Rick Wilson described the first-ever GOP midterm convention, held this week in Dallas, as a trap for candidates who feel pressure to attend in order to stay in Trump's good graces. Wilson predicted the two-day event, where Trump is scheduled to speak both days, will center entirely on him rather than on the economic concerns dogging Republican candidates.

Wilson pointed to voter anger over gas and grocery prices, even in Texas, as a problem no amount of convention spectacle will fix. He warned candidates risk public ridicule if they try to campaign on whatever message Trump delivers from the stage.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A convention built around one man's mood is a shaky place to build a campaign platform. Candidates showing up hoping for a blessing might leave with a headache instead, especially if the man at the podium starts talking about anything other than the price of milk. Voters tend to notice which problems got airtime and which ones got skipped.
