Why Russia’s jet-powered ‘Geran’ drones are so hard to shoot down, and what Kyiv’s falling interception rate means for the future of the war

Russian forces have shifted to launching near-continuous drone attacks on Kyiv throughout the day, increasingly using jet-powered Geran drones that fly faster and are harder to intercept than older propeller models, according to reporting cited by Meduza from the New York Times and BBC.

Ukraine's Air Force says more than 1,500 drones were launched in four days, over half of them jet-powered, up sharply from roughly 300 jet-powered drones in all of June. Ukraine's interception rate has fallen from 95-98% for propeller drones last winter to 88% on August 27 and 79% on August 31.

A Ukrainian official told the Wall Street Journal the country has drones capable of downing the newer Gerans but only a few hundred against a needed several thousand. Overnight strikes on Kyiv and the region killed 12 people, including six railway workers, and injured more than 20, according to authorities.
