Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi called Vladimir Putin's visit to the disputed Kuril island of Iturup

Kafter Russian state media reported he sampled fish roe and spoke with locals there Thursday. The island chain, split between Japanese and Russian claims since the Soviet Union annexed it after World War Two and deported roughly 17,000 Japanese residents, remains the central reason the two countries never signed a postwar peace treaty.

A dispute this entrenched isn't going to be settled by a strongly worded protest note, and both sides know it — this is theater performed for domestic audiences on both ends. Putin gets to project unbothered sovereignty over contested ground while sampling snacks for the cameras; Japan gets to register its objection for the historical record. Neither costs either side anything, which is presumably the point.
