Tampa International Airport officials announced Monday they will not join the TSA's new privatization program, TSA Gold+, and will keep federal screeners in place — a reversal from their stance five weeks earlier when they said they were considering the switch. The program, launched at airports in Charleston and Des Moines, would have handed screening duties to private contractors for the first time since the TSA's creation after 9/11.

CEO Michael Stephens credited an 'extensive review and evaluation' for the decision and praised the existing TSA partnership, while the union representing TSA workers and Rep. Kathy Castor, who had lobbied against privatization, welcomed the outcome.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Five weeks of 'modernization, innovation, and operational resilience' talk quietly resolved into keeping things exactly as they were, which suggests the extensive review mostly involved reading union letters and a congresswoman's mail. Sometimes the boldest reform is admitting the old system was fine.
