Diesel hit a record $6.51 a gallon Monday as fallout from the U.S. conflict with Iran squeezes fuel markets, prompting Sen. Chuck Grassley to publicly beg President Trump for an export embargo to protect Iowa farmers. The White House says it has no such plans.

Gasoline averaged $4.47, up more than a dollar from last year, and inflation data show energy costs jumped 16.3% over twelve months. Seven House Republicans, including two vulnerable Iowa members, broke ranks last week to vote against continuing the unauthorized war, and Senate Democrats plan another War Powers vote this week.

Trump, meanwhile, blamed Russia's war in Ukraine for the diesel spike, even as his own administration's Iran conflict and the resulting Houthi fight over the Bab al-Mandab Strait are widely cited as the immediate drivers. Vance says the administration is doing everything it can, while suggesting states cut their own gas taxes instead.

When the man in charge blames a different war for prices caused by the one he started, that's not confusion, that's just hoping nobody's paying attention. Grassley's out there hollering about diesel prices killing farm income while the administration shrugs and points at Moscow. A senator from the president's own party begging for relief in all capital letters on social media is about as clear a vote of confidence as a sinking rowboat.
