World Rhino Day: What does it take to save a species?

Marking World Rhino Day, Mongabay compiled its past year of rhino reintroduction reporting: southern white rhinos returned to Uganda's Kidepo Valley and Ajai Wildlife Reserve, four decades after the country's last wild northern white rhino was killed for its horn. Mozambique's Zinave National Park, gutted by civil war, has received 64 white and black rhinos since 2022, with at least five black rhino calves born there since.

In India's Manas National Park, 40 calves have been born from 42 rhinos reintroduced between 2006 and 2021, while Nepal's rhino population grew 16.6% between 2015 and 2021. Researchers tracking Nepal's reintroduced rhinos via GPS found the animals traveling farther than expected in search of water and grassland, prompting one researcher to note that success should be measured by habitat health, not just population counts.
