President Trump proposed renaming New Mexico ‘New America’ in a Truth Social post, calling it more ‘prestigious and beautiful’ and citing unnamed people who supposedly suggested it, the same pattern that preceded his Lake Ontario rebranding push amid the Canada trade dispute. New Mexico's congressional and state leaders responded swiftly and without much patience for the idea.

Sen. Ben Ray Luján called the president a ‘sinvergüenza,’ Sen. Martin Heinrich vowed to keep calling the Gulf of Mexico, Lake Ontario and New Mexico by their actual names, and Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said the state's name predates the United States itself. Lujan Grisham also pivoted to gas prices, grocery costs and health care access, arguing the naming exercise distracts from those issues.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A state that had its name four hundred years before anybody thought up ours does not need a fresh coat of paint from Washington. Notice how the renaming urge shows up right when the price of eggs and a tank of gas is on everybody's tongue. Signs are cheap. Groceries are not.
