New Florida Department Law Enforcement commissioner is a familiar face

Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Florida Cabinet appointed Larry Keefe, a former top aide, as commissioner of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, pending Senate confirmation. Keefe previously served as DeSantis's public safety czar and helped orchestrate the 2022 flights transporting migrants from Texas to Martha's Vineyard, an operation that prompted the Legislature to limit the state's out-of-state immigration enforcement.

Public records showed Keefe used a private email under the alias “Clarice Starling” to help a former client secure the contract for those migrant flights. He also played a role in DeSantis's 2022 removal of Hillsborough County State Attorney Andrew Warren, testifying about research conducted ahead of Warren's suspension.

Keefe briefly led the State Board of Immigration Enforcement before departing last October in what the governor's office described as a planned move. DeSantis said Keefe has performed at the highest possible level in every position he's held.

When a man books state business under the name of a movie character, most employers would take away his email password, not hand him the keys to the state police. The governor says Keefe has done his best work in every job he's held, and that's exactly what worries a person who remembers the jobs. The Senate still gets a look, and it ought to read the file slower than the Cabinet did.
