A federal court in Washington dismissed the federal government's lawsuit seeking an unredacted, statewide voter registration list from the secretary of state.

The government argued Title III of the Civil Rights Act required the handover; the court found Congress never intended that law to sweep in every document a state happens to hold.

Judges also noted the government failed to explain how retention rules would even apply to a list that updates constantly.

You can't demand a photograph of a river and complain when it keeps moving. This lawsuit asked a state to hand over a document that changes by the hour, then acted surprised when a judge pointed out that's not how any of this works. The government came in with a legal theory built on wanting the data, not on the law actually saying so.
