Myanmar's military-backed government says it has verified 308,797 of the 828,824 Rohingya refugees on a Bangladesh-supplied list as former Rakhine residents, and will accept their return once security conditions improve. Of the total list, 113,507 could not be verified and 4,241 were flagged as involved in what Myanmar called terrorist activity.
The crisis enters its ninth year since a 2017 military crackdown, described by the international community as ethnic cleansing, drove more than 700,000 Rohingya into Bangladesh. Myanmar still refuses to recognize the Rohingya as a lawful ethnic minority, calling them Bengalis, and disputes claims that more than a million people were displaced.
A 2018 repatriation agreement with Bangladesh has never succeeded, derailed by the 2021 military coup and subsequent fighting between the army and the Arakan Army, which now controls much of Rakhine. Malaysia's PM said in July that Myanmar agreed to take back 5,000 Rohingya refugees there, though a Myanmar foreign ministry official disputed that characterization, saying the program covers only verified detainees.
