More than 1,300 US flags surrounded by Indian tricolours were arranged into the number 250 at Veterans Memorial Park in Parsippany, New Jersey, setting a Guinness World Record for Largest Flagpole Number.

The event, marking both India's 80th Independence Day and America's 250th anniversary, was organized by the Indian Consulate General in New York with the Federation of Indian Associations and tech company Zoho.

Officials including New Jersey's lieutenant governor, a US congresswoman, and the Indian consul general spoke about diaspora contributions and bilateral ties, the standard remarks for this genre of event.

The weekend also included flag hoistings at the UN mission, an illuminated Empire State Building, and a Madison Avenue parade featuring cast members from an Indian sitcom as grand marshals.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Nothing says international friendship quite like a flagpole arithmetic contest adjudicated by a British record-keeping company. It is a pleasant enough afternoon, but the press release's insistence on 'enduring contributions' and 'bridge between nations' does a lot of lifting for what is, at bottom, a very large and very literal number.
