Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers announced he now backs a statewide moratorium on new Michigan data centers, a reversal that followed reporting by The Lever revealing his millions of dollars in AI-related investments. Rogers previously supported policies to speed data center development before adopting his current call for a comprehensive state strategy.

Rep. Tom Barrett faces similar scrutiny for campaigning against data centers while having voted for the One Big Beautiful Bill Act's tax incentives benefiting the same industry, as Democratic challenger Will Lawrence makes opposition central to his campaign. Meanwhile, actual local governments are doing the slower work: Ypsilanti Township passed a six-month moratorium over a University of Michigan supercomputing facility, Genoa Township extended its own pause to finish a noise study, and Mason launched a town hall series to keep residents informed.

When a candidate's position on infrastructure policy moves in lockstep with a reporter's disclosure of his portfolio, the word for that isn't evolution, it's timing. The townships doing noise studies and holding town halls look almost quaint next to the candidates discovering principles right when the ledger gets inconvenient.
