Terry Schilling, president of the American Principles Project, told CNN's ‘This Morning’ on Wednesday that Republicans' 2026 midterm outlook would look different without $5-a-gallon gas or what he called the unpopular Iran war launched by Trump in February. He said his group's research shows voters trust Republicans on cultural issues but not on the economy, adding ‘and for good reason.’

Schilling said Republicans are failing to articulate a plan going forward. Anchor Audie Cornish pushed back, noting cultural issues rank far below economic concerns in polling, and Schilling conceded the point but argued such surveys understate how cultural positions might shift voters once known.

A party spokesman going on television to say his own side has earned the public's distrust is not something you see every day, and it is worth noticing when it happens. He tried to pivot to culture-war issues as the consolation prize, like a man bragging about the trim on a truck that will not start. The gas prices and the war are the story, and he said so himself.
