A Washington state teenager identified as K.M.K. and her mother, Stephanie Brown, asked the Supreme Court on an emergency basis to bar transgender athletes from girls' sports statewide and let Brown opt her daughter out of matches without penalty. The request follows the court's June ruling in West Virginia v. B.P.J., which upheld Republican state bans on transgender athletes but did not require states like Washington to adopt one. K.M.K. is represented by the Alliance for Defense of Freedom, which also worked that earlier case.
The teen says she was assaulted by a transgender wrestler during a 2025 match; prosecutors declined to charge the athlete, though a Title IX investigation by the school district and a separate federal investigation remain open. A lower court found factual disputes over safety and competitive risk and rejected both the Title IX and parental-rights claims; the Ninth Circuit declined to pause that ruling. The Supreme Court has asked the state athletics association and school district to respond by Oct. 13.
