The Financial Times reports Trump announced an energy-infrastructure ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine that Moscow has not confirmed and, per FT sources, does not want before winter, believing cold-weather strikes give it leverage over Kyiv. Ukraine had spent months seeking exactly such a pause while Russia instead intensified attacks, according to officials involved in the talks.
Two senior Ukrainian officials told the FT they believe Trump made the announcement to reassure Americans anxious about fuel prices, following his September 13 call for Ukraine to stop hitting Russian refineries over diesel-price concerns. Zelensky says Ukraine is willing to enter such a deal but doubts Russia intends to honor it; the Kremlin has not commented on Trump's claim.

Announcing a ceasefire that only one side signed is a peculiar way to broker peace, though it does wonders for a headline. Somebody ought to remind the man that saying a fence is built doesn't keep the neighbor's dog out of your yard. Ukraine's been asking for this pause for months and getting more shelling instead, which is the part of the story that actually matters.
