A Russian lieutenant colonel identified as Sergei Sechkov was killed in a car explosion in St. Petersburg on Aug. 27, according to Agentstvo and his father's confirmation to reporters. Sechkov reportedly served in the 332nd Separate Guards Red Banner Helicopter Regiment, a unit Ukrainian military intelligence has accused of war crimes.

Russian outlet Fontanka claimed, citing unnamed sources, that a 24-year-old woman planted the bomb and fled to Turkey, though it offered no evidence. A separate outlet reported the victim had told superiors he believed he was on a hit list.
