Trump attacked longtime Republican strategist Karl Rove on Truth Social, calling him a ‘stone cold loser’ afflicted with ‘Trump Derangement Syndrome’ and questioning why Fox News and the Wall Street Journal keep him around. The outburst followed reports that Rove, architect of two Bush presidential wins, plans to vote for Democrat Jon Rosenthal over Republican Bo French for the Texas Railroad Commission.

Rove reportedly called French a ‘bigot’ over a racist social media post French made over the weekend, and said he'd voted Democrat only once before, in 1994. Rove has recently voiced concern about Trump's ‘narcissism’ hurting the party's midterm chances.

Thirty years of straight-ticket voting broken over one bad post is the kind of thing that should worry a party more than a president's insult ever could. Calling the man a loser doesn't change the arithmetic Rove was doing, it just tells you who's rattled by it. When your own strategist starts crossing the aisle, the problem was never really about him.
