The Financial Times reported that President Trump's announced energy truce between Ukraine and Russia was designed to signal to American voters that he is addressing high fuel prices, citing two senior Ukrainian officials. Trump had blamed Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian refineries for driving up global diesel costs, a claim the Kremlin welcomed.

A KSE Institute analysis cited in the report found the U.S. confrontation with Iran cut Persian Gulf diesel and gasoil exports by 152 million barrels between March and August, versus a 68 million barrel drop from Russian export disruptions, more than twice the impact Trump attributed to Ukraine. Zelensky said he would only halt strikes on Russian infrastructure with verified reciprocity from Moscow, and that Russia has shown no genuine willingness to de-escalate.

The arithmetic here isn't hard. One column of that ledger is more than twice the other, and the smaller one got all the blame, which tells you the blame was picked first and the numbers were invited along later. A truce that exists mainly so somebody at home feels better about the pump is about as useful as painting over a leak in the roof.
