Two people died and roughly 90 residents were evacuated by boat after two wildfires broke out within minutes of each other on the island of Salamina, near Athens, on Sunday afternoon.

Nearly 200 firefighters, 50 fire engines, aircraft and five coastguard patrol boats were deployed to stop the blazes from merging into one larger fire across the island's mountain terrain. Salamina, home to about 37,000 people, many elderly, had been under a high wildfire risk warning that day.

The fires are part of a broader wave hitting Europe this weekend, including a blaze in a Belgian nature reserve, as high heat continues to fuel flames across the continent.
