The International Criminal Court ruled Thursday that former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, 81, is fit to stand trial on crimes against humanity charges over his drug war crackdown, based on findings from an independent panel of experts. The panel concluded he can understand the charges, follow proceedings, and instruct his defense counsel. His trial is scheduled to begin Nov. 30.
Duterte, who led the Philippines from 2016 to 2022 and earlier served as mayor of Davao, faces three counts of crimes against humanity, with prosecutors alleging involvement in at least 76 murders committed between 2013 and 2018. He is the first Asian former head of state to face trial at the ICC.
