The Telegraph's editorial board argued this is ‘the wrong time to make life easy for Vladimir Putin,’ following U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner's back-to-back visits to Moscow and Kyiv on Sept. 5-6. The paper noted the pair's Kyiv trip was their first, despite repeated prior visits to Russia, and that a plan is now expected to be drafted and presented to Ukrainians after their return to Washington.

The editorial predicted Putin will not surrender eastern Ukraine or Crimea, calling that concession the political end for him, and warned that Zelenskyy accepting Russia's territorial gains would devalue years of Ukrainian sacrifice. It also revisited Trump's original 24-hour peace pledge, calling it an ‘excessive boast’ that misjudged the war as a negotiable deal.

The paper argued Putin now faces real strain, citing drone strikes on Moscow and domestic fuel shortages, and said that weakness is reason to press harder rather than ease off, closing with skepticism about whether Trump's envoys share that view.

A newspaper doing arithmetic on fuel lines and drone strikes and concluding the man is not winning is not exactly a stretch. The harder trick is getting the people holding the pen on the actual deal to do the same math instead of just admiring how fast they can produce a plan. Three visits to Moscow and one first-time stop in Kyiv is its own kind of scorekeeping.
