The Supreme Court agreed to hear a DOJ case asking whether providing food, shelter, or clothing to a terrorist organization counts as material support under immigration law, even without advancing actual terrorist acts. Attorney General Todd Blanche argues the bar applies to anyone who helps such a group function day-to-day, not just those who enable violence directly.

The case centers on Izuchukwu Ozurumba, who says he was lured to a camp outside Lagos, Nigeria, with a fake job offer and then held against his will by an armed group that forced him to cook thousands of meals without pay. An immigration judge found him inadmissible for material support to a terrorist organization; the Fourth Circuit reversed, ruling such incidental support was too trifling to count.

Ozurumba, who fled the camp and says he was hunted across Nigeria and into Venezuela before reaching the U.S. border to seek asylum, argues the government's position would drain the statute of any meaningful limit. The DOJ counters that the Fourth Circuit's ruling conflicts with three other circuits and would hamper efforts to deny immigration benefits to those with terrorism ties.
