Rescuers recovered eight more bodies Thursday from the site of an avalanche that buried 16 expedition workers at the base camp of Himlung peak, bringing the death toll to 15 with one person still missing. The avalanche struck early Sunday as Nepali workers prepared for upcoming climbing expeditions near the Chinese border.
A team of 11 rescuers dug through more than 14 feet of snow to recover the bodies, which included mountain guides and kitchen workers recovered in stages over several days. Separately, Nepal is still searching for victims of August floods that killed more than 1,400 people and left over 5,000 missing, with fresh rain since Thursday triggering more floods and landslides that have killed at least 21 more people.
