Democratic candidate Will Lawrence has rolled out a constituency services plan called ‘Michigan First,’ built around quarterly in-person town halls, mobile and virtual office hours, faster response times, and a dedicated liaison for veterans and seniors in Michigan's 7th District. The plan directly targets incumbent Rep. Tom Barrett, whom Lawrence and local constituents have criticized for a lack of accessibility, including a virtual town hall reportedly plagued by technical problems that left residents unable to log in or get confirmation.
Lawrence frames the plan as a response to voters who feel elected officials answer to corporate donors rather than constituents, and says his office would partner with community organizations on housing, healthcare, and public safety. He pledges to take office hours on the road to libraries and senior centers rather than wait for constituents to come to him.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Promising to hold town halls and answer your mail is the kind of pledge that should not need a press release, it should just be the job description. That it is being marketed as a bold plan tells you plenty about how low the bar has sunk in that district. A dedicated liaison for veterans is a fine idea, but it should not take a campaign ad to get an elected official to pick up the phone.
