Bucharest offers deeper defense and nuclear energy cooperation

Romanian President Nicușor Dan told the inaugural Carpathian Eight summit on Sept. 18 that Bucharest is ready to deepen defense industry cooperation with Ukraine and share its nuclear energy expertise, according to Ukrainian outlet Novyny.LIVE. Dan said Romania has a long defense manufacturing tradition and existing capacity, though he acknowledged the sector had been poorly managed for three decades.

Dan and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also held bilateral talks on the summit sidelines covering the EU's SAFE defense financing instrument and joint drone production, Zelenskyy's office reported. On energy, Dan cited roughly 50 years of Romanian nuclear experience, built around the Cernavodă plant's Canadian CANDU reactors, and offered to loop in trained specialists for regional exchanges.

The Carpathian Eight itself is new, launched by Ukraine and bringing together Romania, Serbia, Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary and EU institutions to work on security, energy, transport and trade across the region.

A president standing up to say his own country let its defense industry rot for thirty years before offering to rebuild someone else's is the kind of honesty you don't often get from a podium. Credit where it's due, that's a more candid accounting than most governments manage about their own backyard. Whether the investment and the drones actually show up is the part worth watching, not the speech.
