UN warns DRC outbreak is killing one person every 30 minutes – Channel Africa

UN officials say the Ebola Bundibugyo outbreak in eastern DRC, declared May 15, has infected over 4,660 people and killed more than 2,180, a fatality rate near 47 percent, and is now killing one person every 30 minutes. Under-Secretary-General Tom Fletcher warned the virus is outrunning the international response.

Ituri province holds the bulk of cases, but the outbreak has spread to six of DRC's 26 provinces and into Uganda, complicated by ongoing conflict between government forces and the M23 militia that has displaced millions. The UN has released an additional $30.5 million, bringing total funding to over $54 million, and is doubling burial teams and tripling treatment capacity.
