At the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Formula E driver Dan Ticktum drove the new 815hp GEN4 car up the hillclimb in 42.46 seconds while a Google Pixel 10 Pro, wired into the car's CAN bus, ran a local AI model called Gemma to analyze telemetry in real time. Google Cloud executives say the phone fed Ticktum feedback on time loss, traction, and balance through an earpiece within about a second, with the local model able to reach out to the cloud-based Gemini for additional data like timing feeds.

The pitch, delivered by Google Cloud's John Abel and Formula E's Dan Cherowbrier, is that this hybrid of on-device and cloud AI represents a broader shift toward embedding intelligence at 'the point of action' — with manufacturing, robotics, warehouses, and healthcare devices all name-checked as future beneficiaries. No independent data on the AI's actual coaching accuracy, driver improvement, or reliability under Goodwood's dust and heat was provided beyond the executives' own characterizations.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A phone bolted to a race car giving speed tips is a fine demo; whether it says anything meaningful about warehouses or hospitals is a leap made entirely by the people selling the cloud subscription. Every 'vast implications beyond motorsport' story runs on the same fuel: a flashy stunt, some executive quotes, and zero evidence from the industries actually being promised revolution. Ask again when a warehouse worker, not a Google marketing director, describes the results.
