Gerhard Schröder, the former German chancellor, has joined the supervisory board of Giperglobus LLC, which runs the Globus hypermarket chain's 22 stores across eight Russian regions. Company owner Thomas Bruch said Schröder's 'many years of experience' in Russian affairs would help the business find 'constructive solutions' and maintain a dialogue-focused approach, according to a spokesperson who spoke to RBC.
Globus is among the small number of foreign retailers, alongside Metro Cash & Carry, Auchan, and Lemana PRO, that kept operating in Russia after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine; Putin placed those other three under temporary state management by decree in September. Schröder has maintained his relationship with Putin throughout, meeting him in Moscow in 2022 and again in 2026, and Putin has called him his 'preferred' mediator for Russia-Ukraine talks, an offer Europe has refused to accept.

A man gets dumped from his own country's good graces for sticking too close to a dictator, and the answer is to hand him a supervisory board seat at a grocery chain. Calling that 'experience in Russian political and economic affairs' is a polite way of saying he knows who to call and has never stopped calling them. The stores sell milk and bread same as always, but the board meetings must be something to see.
