Russia continues to demand full control of Donbas, a condition Ukraine calls completely unacceptable.
U.S.-mediated direct talks between Russia and Ukraine took place in early 2026 but broke off when the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran began, and have not resumed. Both Moscow and Kyiv say officially they remain open to further rounds.
