Donald Trump told a Gastonia rally he loves North Carolina and called its residents incredible patriots who built the country, while campaigning for Senate candidate Michael Whatley. Minutes later he reversed course, describing the state as one of the most violent and worst in the nation, a claim not supported by the latest available FBI crime data.

Trump blamed the supposed crime surge on Democratic rival Roy Cooper, the former governor now running against Whatley, while also taking a jab at North Carolina's current governor. The whiplash occurred within the same speech, aimed at the same crowd, over the same two minutes.

The full dispatch is available from the source below.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
You can tell a crowd it built the country or you can tell it the place has gone to seed, but doing both inside two minutes is a neat trick. It's the same pitch as a man running down the house he's trying to sell you, and the crime numbers don't back the running-down part anyway. The people in those seats live there. They already know which it is.
