Disney filed a 46-page lawsuit against the Trump administration, accusing the FCC of waging a retaliatory campaign against ABC over its news coverage and Jimmy Kimmel's commentary, and seeking an injunction to protect ABC's broadcast licenses.

The dispute traces to September, when Kimmel's show was suspended for five days after FCC Chairman Brendan Carr publicly threatened ABC over Kimmel's remarks about reactions to Charlie Kirk's assassination. Days later, the FCC ordered eight ABC-owned stations to file early license renewals with just 30 days' notice, decades ahead of schedule and unprecedented for a commonly owned station group.

Disney says the licenses, not due to expire until 2028-2031, are now facing possible denial or revocation before the halfway mark of their terms. The FCC responded that it has been reviewing Disney for alleged DEI discrimination for over a year and accused Disney of running a disinformation campaign; Commissioner Anna Gomez, the FCC's lone Democrat, called the lawsuit a welcome pushback against government intimidation.

There is something clarifying about a regulator that announces a year-long discrimination inquiry only after being sued over something else entirely; the timing does all the testifying that the press office cannot. A license renewal demanded decades early with a month to comply is not oversight, it is a hand on the throat with paperwork attached. When the lone dissenting commissioner has to welcome a lawsuit as the healthiest thing to happen to the agency all year, the agency has already answered the complaint.
