Nearly 1,400 workers were laid off from the former Navistar truck factory in Springfield, Ohio, on Wednesday, just three days before President Trump held a rally nearby in Vandalia as part of a 32-day stretch of midterm campaign stops.
The layoffs were large enough to erase roughly a year of job growth in the greater Dayton area. Kyle Bos, a 30-year-old UAW member who said he voted for Trump three times, said he is now canvassing for Democrats, citing rising grocery costs and a feeling that politics as usual failed working people here.
The report notes Ohio's Senate race, between Republican incumbent Jon Husted and Democratic challenger Sherrod Brown, could help decide Senate control, with polling cited showing just 17% approval of Trump's handling of the cost of living. Trump's Saturday rally reportedly did not address the grocery prices, gas prices, or local layoffs directly.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A plant closes its doors on a Wednesday and the president's motorcade rolls through on a Saturday talking about something else entirely. The man who held up three fingers for three Trump votes isn't asking for a parade, he's asking somebody to notice the lot where his job used to be. Seems like that's the whole election in one parking lot.
