A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia on August 10, centered near San José del Palmar in Chocó, killing more than 265 people and collapsing buildings across Cali, Pereira, Manizales and Quibdó, prompting a national disaster declaration. It is the fourth major Latin American earthquake of 2026, following a magnitude 7.4 off Chiapas, Mexico in July and a June doublet of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 in Venezuela that devastated La Guaira and Caracas and left thousands dead.

Despite the clustering, USGS historical data and geophysicists cited by the BBC say the global rate of major earthquakes has stayed stable for a century, with roughly fifteen magnitude 7.0-7.9 quakes and one magnitude 8.0-plus quake expected annually; experts describe the recent cluster as ordinary statistical fluctuation. They attribute the public sense of increased frequency to instant global media coverage, denser urban development in earthquake-prone areas, and expanded detection networks that now catalog quakes once missed entirely.

Colombia's quake, though equally powerful as Mexico's, caused fewer surface casualties because its depth of 103 kilometers allowed rock layers to absorb energy before it reached the surface, unlike Venezuela's shallow 10-kilometer quakes in June. Geophysics experts have also debunked viral conspiracy theories claiming human technology or weather modification caused the Colombian earthquake.
