Amtrak plans to roll out 83 new Airo trainsets starting this fall, beginning with eight on the Pacific Northwest's Cascades route, part of an $8 billion investment funded largely by the Biden-era infrastructure law.

The new trains carry more passengers, hit speeds up to 125 mph, meet the EPA's strictest Tier 4 emissions standards, and can switch between diesel and electric power without a locomotive swap — a fix aimed at the notorious hour-long delay at Washington's Union Station.

Amtrak has set ridership records two years running, yet the Trump administration has proposed steep cuts to passenger rail funding even as it announced $3 billion, including $2 billion for train purchases, in August.
