Trump administration asks Supreme Court to permit quick third-country deportations

The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court to lift an appeals court order that had required immigration officers to give migrants notice and a chance to raise safety concerns before deporting them to countries other than their own. Solicitor General D. John Sauer argued the lower court's ruling disrupts sensitive diplomatic arrangements and imposes heavy costs on the government.

The 1st Circuit panel had not banned third-country removals outright, only required proper procedure, including adequate notice and an opportunity to raise a fear-based claim. This marks the second time the administration has sought emergency Supreme Court intervention on the policy, after a similar request in June 2025 led the justices to send the case back to a Massachusetts district court.

The Supreme Court has ordered briefs from both sides by Monday.
