JD Vance, widely seen as the 2028 Republican front-runner, is facing chatter that he lacks the charisma to close the deal, with a new Emerson College/The Hill survey showing Marco Rubio outperforming him in four of five hypothetical matchups. Pete Buttigieg leads both Republicans by five points in the same poll.

Navigator Research found Vance's favorability barely edges out Trump's, with net approval at negative 27 on inflation and cost of living and negative 39 on gas prices; immigration is his best issue at negative 9. Recent public moments cited include a flat joke about a bearded maintenance worker, an attempted Wisconsin accent that drew no laughs, and a rambling comparison of election fraud deniers to his six-year-old lying about stealing cookies.

Even some in Vance's own political orbit are reportedly skeptical he can replicate Trump's hold on the movement.

A man can memorize every talking point in the party platform and still bomb in front of a crowd if he can't read a room, and that seems to be Vance's trouble in a nutshell. Trying on a Wisconsin accent and comparing voters to a cookie-stealing six-year-old isn't charisma, it's a fellow guessing at what charisma sounds like. The numbers suggest the guessing isn't working.
