The White House says President Trump has signed an executive order temporarily allowing tax-free dyed diesel on highways and deferring the 24.4-cent-per-gallon federal diesel tax through the end of the year, with no interest or penalties attached. The administration frames this as direct relief for truckers and farmers facing high diesel prices tied to the Russia-Ukraine war and global refining shortages.
The release calculates savings at about $60 per 250-gallon fill, rising past $100 if states match the federal deferral. It does not address how the Highway Trust Fund, which the diesel tax normally feeds, will be backfilled once the deferral ends.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Deferring a tax isn't the same as cutting one, it just moves the bill to a date nobody's named yet. A farmer still has to fill the tank today and the invoice for that trust fund comes due eventually, with interest baked into somebody's year-end surprise. Calling a loan forgiveness in advance is a neat trick if you can get away with it.
